Sakuraya

Established in 1920, located close to Matsumoto Castle

Sakuraya is a famous local unagi (eel) restaurant and has appeared in several guidebooks.
The restaurant has a long common history with the city of Matsumoto. Sakuraya’s founder, originally from Toyama Prefecture, began serving sushi and other Japanese dishes in Matsumoto as early as 1920.

Specialties: Boiled eel wrapped in a bamboo leaf

Boiled eel wrapped in a bamboo leaf; Chimaki (rice cake wrapped in a bamboo leaf)
In 1975, the current third owner made a popular new specialty, “chimaki,” a Japanese glutinous rice cake wrapped in a bamboo leaf.

The light Japanese-style interior

The interior design is simple and light. While you eat, you can admire traditional Japanese pottery collected by the Manager, Okami-san.
